日上三竿的较早出处可追溯至南朝梁·萧子显《南齐书·天文志上》，原文相关表述为“永明五年十一月丁亥，日出高三竿，朱色赤黄”。
后来在**唐·韩愈《岁华纪丽·春》**等典籍中也有引用，逐渐演变为形容时辰已晚的常用成语。
