Startle 是本周《经济学人》（2025年11月8日刊）标题为“The rise of singlehood is reshaping the world”一文中出现的一个单词：

So the speed with which the norm of marriage—indeed, of relationships of any sort—is being abandoned is startling.

从拼写上来看，不难发现 startle 一词比较好记，就是在熟词 start 后面多了 le 两个字母。

从词源上来看， startle 正是由 start 的词源+反复动词后缀 -le （表示反复、连续及拟声动作）构成而来，最早出现于14世纪，起初用来表示“激动地移动、来回奔跑”，不过这个含义现已不再流行。

什么情况下人会激动地移动呢？往往是受到突然的惊吓之后。于是从这个概念出发，等到了1530年后， startle 便开始发展出现在的主要含义指“（使）惊吓、（使）惊跳、（使）吓一跳、（使）大吃一惊”，侧重指（使）人因受到突然的惊吓或意想不到的刺激而突然移动、跳起或退缩。比如：

• 把他吓得失魂落魄startle him out of his wits
• 这匹烈马很容易受惊。The restive horse startles easily.
• 那个犟男孩像受惊的兔子似的跳了回去。The recalcitrant boy jumped back like a startled rabbit.

而由 startle 衍生而来的形容词 startling 则相应表示“令人惊吓的、使人惊跳的、使人惊起的、令人震惊的、惊人的”。比如：

• 惊人的发现a startling discovery

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：因此，婚姻规范——事实上任何形式的人际关系规范——被抛弃的速度之快令人震惊。
