As the Seattle sun streamed over the fence of the vacant lot behind their house, Per and Cecilia saw no limits to zoning. They recalled afternoons in Cecilia's native Argentina, when family and friends gathered around a quincho (a traditional outdoor dining space), the aroma of meat sizzling in the air, and laughter filled the courtyard. Thus, the design, designed to "bring the flavor of Argentinian cuisine to Seattle," became a "container of joy" that combined traditional warmth with modern convenience.

The design's original intention revolved around the mantra:Maximum Fun, Minimum Fuss. This is not only a functional requirement, but also a gentle homage to Cecilia's hometown. Rather than replicating the heaviness of the traditional quincho, the team employed modern materials to create a minimalist design, bringing the joy of gathering back to its essence. The exterior walls are clad in weather-resistant Taylor metal and Hardie concrete panels, requiring no frequent maintenance after rain, much like the weather-resistant quinchos found in rural Argentina. Davis "Pewter" concrete floors, both indoors and outdoors, are impervious to spilled coffee, splattered barbecue grease, and even bare feet. The soft clatter of children's shoes against the ground as they chase each other evokes a sense of relaxed, carefree living.

The code for "Fun" lies in every detail, crafted for joyful gatherings. In an outdoor corner, a Magma 1200 grill imported from Buenos Aires gleams with a metallic sheen. In the evening, the flames of a DCS gas grill lick the steaks, the aroma mingling with the Seattle evening breeze, instantly evoking Cecilia's childhood culinary memories. Rattan chairs frame a warm area around the fire table, where elders, sipping hot drinks, watch the younger generation splashing in the Endless Pools Swim Spa, the water splashing onto the lawn, scattering tiny glints of light. The interior is more like an "extended gathering cabin": when the large Sierra Pacific sliding glass doors are pushed open, sunlight pours in, connecting the kitchen, dining area and courtyard into one. The Dekton sintered stone countertops selected by Mariana Flombaum have a delicate luster, and the light clink of knife and stone when cutting vegetables overlaps with the laughter and conversation outside. The wall cabinet slides open to reveal a coffee station, and the hum of the coffee grinder awakens the morning, while closing it hides all clutter, and even the countertop exudes "effortless neatness."

The clash of materials reveals a balance of warmth. The cold, hard metal exterior and concrete floor are softened by the 1x6 cedar veneer ceiling—running your fingertips over the wood grain reveals a warmth similar to that of an Argentinian quincho. Bomma's Tim pendant lamp hangs above the dining table, its smoky glass shade filtering a warm glow. At night, it seems to bring the starlight of the Argentinian prairie into the room. Nora Lighting's Iolite downlights, recessed in the ceiling, provide a soft, non-glaring glow, perfectly illuminating the sizzling Argentinian sausages on the grill and revealing the delicate brushstrokes of Jennifer Gautheir's "Sister Wave" painting in the attic as friends and family chat.

Most moving is the design's precise response to emotional needs. A custom-made steel ladder, custom-designed by DeForest Architects, rolls down to the mezzanine floor and unfolds. It serves as Per's small office during the day, and at night, with a mattress, it becomes a bedroom for visiting relatives and friends. This ladder embodies Cecilia's understanding of home: a quincho in her hometown never leaves guests feeling cramped, and this should be no different. The bathroom, clad in glossy Metro Gray tile for clean, easy-to-maintain aesthetic, features a ceramic soap dish Cecilia brought back from Argentina. In the bedroom, Allison Rohland's vibrant painting, "I Think I Will Play Today," seems to echo the smiling faces of her children chasing butterflies on the lawn during every gathering.

Today, The Quincho quietly grows in a Seattle courtyard. When the aroma of baking wafts up again, Cecilia, watching family and friends gathered around, is reminded of the quinchos of her hometown and falls in love with this "familiar yet fresh" space. The design has lived up to expectations—it's more than just a building; it's the stitch that connects "hometown memories" with "present joy," making every gathering warm and stress-free.
