Belt and Road Brings Medical Assurance

— Shanghai Children’s Hospital Provides Multidisciplinary, Full-Cycle Health Management Services for Lao Friends

The year 2025 marks the 64th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Laos. Sharing mountains and rivers, the two countries are bound by a special bond as comrades and brothers. On the occasion of Chinese Doctors’ Day, August 19, a group of Lao visitors, including Yotthida Boutchanpheng, Malaisone Thammavong, and Kongseng Soukhavong, traveled with their families to the International Medical and Health Management Center of Shanghai Children’s Hospital. Their visit focused on two key goals: obtaining specialized medical consultation and guidance on medication, and receiving comprehensive family-oriented health management services.

The Health Management Center promptly activated its international service team. Following preliminary consultation and review of medical records, the center initiated multidisciplinary collaboration. Neurology expert Director Chen Xuqin was invited to assess a 13-year-old adolescent. Since February of this year, the adolescent had sought treatment in multiple countries including Singapore and Thailand, with inconsistent outcomes. After adjustments in dosage, the condition is now under control, though the underlying cause remains uncertain. After carefully retracing the medical history, Director Chen Xuqin determined that the symptoms are likely linked to complications at birth, diagnosing a symptomatic disorder accompanied by localized motor and strength impairment. She explained that this is a manageable condition, that the current treatment regimen is adequate, and that the patient has shown confidence and cooperation. At the same time, she emphasized that disease management is a long-term process requiring strict adherence to medication and timely medical attention if symptoms worsen, to ensure stable control.

Based on the patient’s condition, the Health Management Center refined its specialized age- and theme-based health examination package by introducing a drug safety monitoring module and incorporating immune function assessments. These measures ensure comprehensive support throughout the course of treatment. In parallel, targeted health check-ups at leading tertiary hospitals in Shanghai were arranged for three accompanying family members, achieving a truly “one-stop family health management” service.

Looking ahead, once the family returns home, the Health Management Center will continue to provide cross-border remote follow-up services. This approach ensures that the health needs of all family members are addressed at different stages, guaranteeing the continuity and integrity of full-cycle, whole-family health management.

Through the model of “one-stop coordination + specialist oversight,” and in line with international standards, the Health Management Center not only consolidated expert opinions but also strengthened aspects often overlooked in long-term care, such as medication follow-up and allergy management. By embedding the concept of family-centered health into medical services, the Center offers more comprehensive and sustainable protection for both patient recovery and overall family well-being. The visitors expressed heartfelt appreciation, noting: “After traveling thousands of miles, we finally found reliable medical care in Shanghai.”

Vice President Chen Jinjin, Deputy Directors Ren Jiaying and Jiang Lian of the Health Management Center, along with Head Nurse Hong Xia, Attending Physician Yang Fan, and their colleagues from the Child Health Department, took part in the reception. On this special occasion of Doctors’ Day, the Lao guests, together with Vice President Chen Jinjin, conveyed warm greetings and sincere appreciation to all the physicians of the hospital.

Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong has highlighted that China–Laos relations are deep and enduring, evolving from solidarity in times of struggle to close cooperation in economic and social development, and serving as a model of inter-party and state-to-state relations. Since China advanced the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, China and Laos were among the first to reach bilateral consensus, with pragmatic cooperation yielding significant achievements. Looking ahead, deeper collaboration in medical and health development is expected under the Belt and Road framework.
