NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Atchafalaya Basinkeeper (Louisiana, U.S.) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the New Orleans District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (MVN) to promote responsible environmental stewardship and the sustainable use of vital natural resources. In this agreement, MVN commits to meeting with Atchafalaya Basinkeeper quarterly and sharing publicly releasable information through appropriate channels. The goal is to better manage the Basin ecosystem, which local wildlife and stakeholders depend on. In return, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper agrees to provide accurate information to community stakeholders regarding MVN programs and proposed projects within the Atchafalaya Basin.
Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association (Pennsylvania, U.S.) has recently filed a lawsuit against a York County scrapyard, alleging violations of federal and state clean water laws. The association hopes this legal action will encourage the scrapyard to return to compliance. The lawsuit claims that J&K Salvage is responsible for unauthorized and excessive pollution due to improper handling of solid waste. According to the Riverkeeper Association, J&K Salvage has been discharging pollutants into waterways without a permit since the end of 2024. After three years of sampling the discharge from the scrapyard's pipes, the association found unauthorized pollutants and contamination of nearby wetlands. The contaminants identified include metals and toxic chemicals, such as PFAs, which can harm both water quality and human health.
Satilla Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) celebrates as the construction of a proposed commercial poultry facility along the banks of the Satilla River has been temporarily halted. A group of residents in Coffee County filed a lawsuit in Superior Court seeking an injunction to stop the continued construction and operation of the commercial chicken farm. This proposed facility would be the largest chicken farm east of the Mississippi River, capable of holding up to three million birds at a time. It is planned to be built within the 50- and 100-year floodplains of the Satilla River. Residents are concerned about the facility's proximity to their properties, agricultural land, and business locations, as well as its potential impact on their health. While this temporary injunction prevents construction, it does not halt the planning and preparation for the facility. The court filing also notes that a large poultry farm could produce excessive amounts of phosphorus. Residents fear that the facility would lead to negative health effects, environmental issues, decreased property values, and the risk of bird flu outbreaks.
Suwannee Riverkeeper and St. Mary’s Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) are celebrating the conclusion of a mining project in Alabama, as coal miners have been bought out and operations are officially halted. With the support of The Conservation Fund, LLC, the James M. Cox Foundation, the Holdfast Collective (Patagonia), and all the Waterkeepers of Georgia and Florida, the Alabama-based mining company has ended plans that could have caused significant environmental damage. In 2023, Nutrien renewed its phosphate mining permit in Hamilton County, Florida, intending to conclude operations at that site within ten years. However, phosphate deposits extend further north. In response, various counties and cities have passed resolutions urging the state to protect the entire Okefenokee Swamp, St. Mary’s River and all the blackwater rivers of South Georgia. The Conservation Fund, a nonprofit organization specializing in acquiring at-risk lands, announced the purchase of property near the Okefenokee Swamp, where the Alabama-based company originally planned to mine. This acquisition immediately halted a project that scientists and environmentalists feared could have caused extensive damage to one of North America's largest blackwater swamps.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Poshur River Waterkeeper (Bangladesh) organized events in honor of World Nature Conservation Day 2025 and World Tiger Day. The first event, held at Shamoli Park in Dhaka, aimed to promote a message of unity in protecting nature, advance the national conservation movement, and inspire greater awareness of environmental issues. Speakers emphasized that restoring rivers and natural ecosystems can significantly benefit the community. Participants carried banners and placards underscoring the significance of the day and highlighting the need for environmental protection. The second event took place at the Mongla Upazila Auditorium and featured an awareness program titled “Save the Sundarbans, Save the Tigers.” This event included activities such as discussion sessions, an art competition, and a rally. Speakers stressed the importance of tiger conservation, noting that over the past 25 years, 30 tigers have died—10 from natural causes and 14 due to conflicts with locals. Tigers are not only facing threats from humans but are also suffering from diseases caused by poisoned water, highlighting the urgent need for authorities to address toxic fishing practices and prevent illegal tiger trafficking.
