南美白对虾是餐桌上常见的虾类品种。曾经很长一段时间，南美白对虾的种质资源由国外掌控，我国仅进口种虾的费用每年便高达数千万美元。
经过近10年的研究，我国科研人员在2011年终于成功选育出南美白对虾“中兴1号”，打破国外种质垄断，这是国内首个获得认定的南美白对虾抗病新品种。
