南北朝未建龙城县前属潭中县地。南朝梁大同三年（537年），从潭中县划出设龙城县。景德三年（1006年），龙城县改名柳城县，属柳州。咸淳一年（1265年），柳州州治迁柳城县之龙江南，即今南丹村。1984年2月10日，柳城县从柳州地区划出，归柳州市管辖。可见，历史上柳城县原名龙城县。据（清）《柳州府志》记载：“宋真宗时，取柳州和龙城各一字为名，改龙城县为柳城县。”柳城县由此得名。
