鲁木匠手艺高超，有三个儿子，他让大儿子和二儿子到终南山找木匠神仙学艺，结果两人空手而归，被赶出家门。小儿子鲁班历经千辛万苦来到终南山，回答了神仙的问题，并磨好了缺了口的斧头和又秃又弯的凿子，神仙见他不怕困难、心灵手巧，便把全部手艺都传给了他，鲁班艺成出师后，被尊为木匠祖师。
