当地时间1月5日，乌军称在俄罗斯西部库尔斯克方向发起大规模进攻，乌总统办公室方面对此予以确认。
外媒称乌军此时发动进攻，主要是因为当地天气寒冷。地面结冰后，重型装备可投入使用。
随后俄罗斯国防部表示，俄军5日击退了乌克兰武装力量在库尔斯克地区的两次进攻。
