8月2日上午，湖南郴州市政府在资兴市举行新闻发布会，通报资兴市受“格美”台风影响受灾救灾情况。初步查清共有30人遇难、35人失踪。发布会上，郴州市市长阚保勇提议全场起立向遇难者默哀。
