2002年9月26日深夜，严重超载的“乔拉号”从塞内加尔南部城市济金绍尔返回首都达喀尔，途中遭遇暴风雨，在冈比亚附近海域倾覆。
事后据调查，造成这起灾难的原因是，底层的货物重量很少，而上层以及甲板上的载客太多，导致了船体本身不稳，船的重心也就高了，再遇上风浪，客轮便倾覆了。这次海难共造成1863人死亡，只有64人生还。
