世界银行集团发布的研究报告显示，辅以深层政策改革以提高透明度，改善债务可持续性，减少环境、社会和腐败风险，“一带一路”倡议可促进该地区国家之间的贸易发展并增加全球实际收入。
"Deeper policy reforms" of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will help the mechanism boost trade among nations in the region and increase global real income, a study published by the World Bank has found. Such reforms should be designed to "increase transparency, expand trade, improve debt sustainability, and mitigate environmental, social, and corruption risks," said the study.

2013年9月和10月，国家主席习近平在出访哈萨克斯坦和印度尼西亚时先后提出共建“丝绸之路经济带”和“21世纪海上丝绸之路”的重大倡议。2015年3月，中国发布《推动共建丝绸之路经济带和21世纪海上丝绸之路的愿景与行动》。2017年5月以及2019年4月，中国举办了两届“一带一路”国际合作高峰论坛。2013年以来，共建“一带一路”倡议以政策沟通、设施联通、贸易畅通、资金融通和民心相通为主要内容扎实推进，取得明显成效，一批具有标志性的早期成果开始显现，参与各国得到了实实在在的好处，对共建“一带一路”的认同感和参与度不断增强。在各方共同努力下，“六廊六路多国多港”的互联互通架构基本形成，一大批合作项目落地生根，150多个国家和国际组织同中国签署共建“一带一路”合作协议。共建“一带一路”倡议同联合国、东盟、非盟、欧盟、欧亚经济联盟等国际和地区组织的发展和合作规划对接，同各国发展战略对接。
