因托儿津贴事件不断发酵，1月15日，荷兰首相吕特宣布，他所领导的内阁当天正式辞职。
荷兰税务机构曾要求在2013―2019年间领取过托儿津贴的数千个家庭退还津贴，有的甚至要归还数万欧元。这一事件给不少荷兰家庭造成经济和心理负担。2020年12月，荷兰议会发表调查报告，确认税务机构在此事件上存在行政过失。
