#Eric Allen
40 Years, Holy Rollin’, She Waits, All On Death Row等,把传统纯正的美国蓝调、西部牛仔音乐带到了乐迷面前。
Q&A
If you were to choose a song from the album to introduce yourself for fans who don’t know you, which one would it be?
“40 Years”和“In Me”。
“40 Years” and “In Me.” If you put these two songs together, I think you can get a good idea about my life In the US and how I look at things. “40 Years” is about my father’s life in the midwest, working in a factory, playing music, and living alone in old age. This, of course, reflects my upbringing, what shaped my personality and influences, and my view of one way in which humanity is increasingly failing itself.
“In Me,” about everyday sounds I recall from my time living in New York City, picks up with my life after I left the midwest. The “In Me” lyrics reflect my love for the grittiness, the margins of society, the downtrodden, and my belief that it is those things that make us more conscious, compassionate, soulful people.
The album was created in 2018 and 2019. There are many songs about your hometown, family, and friends. It seems to be an album of memories. What made you start album creation in 2018? Have you been writing songs before?
There is one song directly about my hometown, “Night Falls Again,” and one, “40 Years,” that more indirectly references life in my hometown. Many of the songs have some connection to family, friends, and others from my past and present. But, I think the literature so far has over-emphasized the connection between my Muncie, Indiana hometown and these songs. Muncie is there on the album, and it is certainly important, but these songs also relate to New York City, Malibu in Los Angeles, and across the south from Georgia to Texas.
This album is more about a US subculture - the blue collar, southern influenced, musical subculture that has influenced me. Some call it Americana, roots, blues, folk. To me, it’s just what you get when you can reach inside yourself and pull things out without using any filters. I was able to do this in 2018 and 2019 following alot of tragedy and loss. All my parents had passed away. My sister’s home, which was like home to me, burned in the Malibu fires. So, I felt that those things in the US that were most important to me were disappearing. Finally, after years spent in the dark artistically, I was able to write songs that I feel are real and genuine reflections of me - “Hello My Soul” really speaks to this. Maybe this album is my way of re-connecting to those lost people and places in the US?
You have been in China for many years, and still the album’s tracks are a very pure blues, folk, and country cowboy style. What has influenced and created your style?
这是old school、乡村和蓝草乐队,像Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Ralph Stanley, 和Bill Monroe,混合一些像Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys的德州牛仔。
Well, it goes back to that blue collar, southern influenced, musical subculture I mentioned in Question 2. I grew up from about three years old around my father’s country and western band, and around bluegrass and Appalachian mountain musical styles. This was the old school country and bluegrass like Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Ralph Stanley, and Bill Monroe, with some Texas cowboy mixed-in, like Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. I would call this my Stage One influences.
As I got older, Stage Two I guess, rock bands that came up through a love of the blues, like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles, influenced me. That Stage Two kind of catapulted me into Stage Three later, which included influences by the blues artists from which those rock bands had drawn, like Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Buddy Guy, Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, and rockabilly Carl Perkins, etc.
Stage 3 also included a different kind of blues for me, one I would call a Texas cowboy and westerny blues style, a more acoustic fingerpicking style, like Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Emmylou Harris, and Jerry Jeff Walker. It will be interesting to see what Stage Four brings.
Eric Allen's music belongs to classic, funk and old blues. If you like old school music or western cowboy movies, you will be a fan. Whether it is China, the US, or others, these songs have the desert, no man's land, deserted towns, cowboys, and the 1960s-70s. I like this old school, blues, funk music. Good luck, old friend!
How do you feel about the music scene in Beijing these past years? How has it affected your musical expression?
I am most familiar with the foreign music scene and the Chinese blues scene in Beijing. I can’t really speak specifically for other music scenes here. I feel the Beijing scene is contracting a bit, and shifting more to the outskirts, which is unfortunate. The loss of a place like Caravan, for example, means one less place that is genuinely welcoming to songwriters in a laid-back, supportive atmosphere. These kinds of places are very important to the growth of a music scene in that they help to incubate musical creativity. Fortunately, there are still some of these places around - Soi Baochao and Van G is one that comes to mind.
I have found that the blues scene, particularly among Chinese musicians, is doing pretty well. It’s encouraging that this soulful and roots-based, but less known, genre in China is coming along in a city too laden with backing tracks for instruments or bands that exclusively play popular, upbeat dance cover tunes. Another encouraging sign for musical creativity is that you can currently find at least one open mic or jam Sunday through Thursday night every week in Beijing.
As this is your first album, did you encounter any unexpected things during the entire process of album creation and production?
Well, I learned alot about recording details in the micing, mixing, and mastering process. The studio engineer was Brad Thruoutin, who I highly recommend. Brad is not only good at his craft, he is very patient and was a bit of a teacher for me in terms of production. We spent almost six months recording, mixing, and mastering, with many late nights.
One of the most important things I learned was the value and implications of using multiple microphones on the acoustic guitar and other instruments. Another important thing related to the advantages during the mixing phase of recording the vocals and guitar tracks separately.
Compared with your previous experiences as a musician or band member in New York, is there any special experience in releasing your own album in China this time?
I really have not changed anything about my musical style in China, but certainly the experience here differs from that in New York.
A lot of my songs tell a story. So, I had all the lyrics translated into Chinese to allow for a better understand of what these songs are saying, what they are about, what story they are telling. No, slow songs don’t always mean love songs - especially with my music - I rarely write love songs. I hope that including the lyrics in Chinese will help people understand these stories.
Another way in which the experience has differed was in communicating with some folks on the project who don’t speak English, or communicating through a translator. Both ways require more attention to detail when trying to convey what you want or your opinion. Language barriers have been the main difference in my experience releasing an album in China.
The album is about to be released, and friends in the music industry have given the new album a lot of sincere comments. What would you want listeners to take away from this album?
I hope they can take away that acoustic can be just as powerful as electric. This album is entirely acoustic. It is the feeling that matters, not whether it is electric or not. For example, there is powerful feeling in the acoustic duet “40 Years.” This is a more specific thing that I want listeners to take away from this album. More generally, I want listeners to view this album as pure, from the heart, soulful feeling that reflects the Americana and blues culture from which this music derives.
All on Death Row,Holy Rollin‘,Stillhouse Blues和Rattlesnake Mama每一首歌都表现了Eric Allen的个人风格。 She Waits and All on Death Row。
All on Death Row, Holy Rollin’, Stillhouse Blues, and Rattlesnake Mama each represent that
distinctive Eric Allen personal style. I really like She Waits and All on Death Row. The instrumentation is very full and they're all great songs!
(Ryan),
UFO Space & Guru Hole
Eric's new collection takes you down the Mississippi Delta River Valley via Beijing, China's gritty bar scene. Imagine a blues violin line tugging hard on haunting laments from death row, or a mountain lover remembered in a guitar-picking dream-state, and you have henceforth entered the little-known, hutong-access portal into late-night American blues.
-Ember Swift,
Bring ya’ plow! Songs of dirt, sweat, and toil that reverberate from the porches of the American South to the Hutongs of Beijing! From classic blues shake downs like “Rattlesnake Mama” to the murmurin’ of cello strings in “40 years”, Eric Allen and his Woodshed bring the blues to 2020. Ain’t no artificial flavorin’ in these grits y’all! When ya’ hear the tools of the Woodshed a clangin’ and a bangin’, ya’ hear the pain that relieves the hurt, the sorrow that is unapologetic, and the soul that moves the body!
-Micah McCauley,
Better of Alive主唱
You said that "Road Travels On" was the first song you really liked of your own creation. In what context was this song written? Why do you say this is the first song you ever wrote that you actually liked?
It seemed I was always composing Road Travels On late at night. This process regularly reminded me of the Chicago song “25 Or 6 To 4,” which is about late night difficulties in songwriting. I tend to be up at all hours of the night and Road Travels On is about difficulties in songwriting: Difficulties I had experienced for many years.
The true sentiment of Road Travels On was my frustration in writing, yet my undying belief that the feeling I sought in my music would happen as long as I kept trying, i.e., traveling on that road. At the time, I was also listening to old Townes Van Zandt songs every day, and that really impacted the imagery in Road Travels On. For awhile, Townes would ride his horse, Amigo, through the mountains from Aspen to Crested Butte, Colorado each year. You will find lines in this song that draw directly from the imagery of those rides.
So, Road Travels On was the first song I wrote that I felt reflected me - kind of a drifting, floating night owl struggling to express myself musically, but determined to keep singing ‘til the end. That’s why I actually liked this song - why it’s on this album instead of collecting dust or crumpled-up in the circular file.
If you had a chance to travel back to a certain day in the past, what day would it be?
I don’t know, I don’t like this kind of question. Is it meant that I would travel back to change something that I didn’t like, or to experience again something that I did like? Should I say my wedding day or the day my first child was born? I’m twice divorced with no children. Should I say the day I got my driver’s license. I’ve never driven a car. It’s kind of like ‘What’s your favorite song, favorite band?’ I never know the answer. It changes based on my mood that day.
One day, however, that I would say is important is the day, in May 2012, when I left my corporate job in New York. That was a turning point because, although corporate work provides more financial stability, there’s nothing like the corporate mindset to stifle artistic creativity. Leaving the corporate world allowed me space to open myself as a creative artist. So, that was a very important day. But, in reality, every day is important as long as I’m alive!
Three things to look forward to in 2021?
(1) The actual release of my album, Eric Allen, on January 12th with a release show to follow at Jianghu Bar on January 23rd. Come join us!
(2) Look for the Eric Allen Woodshed, and me solo, on tour throughout China starting in the spring. The Woodshed is also looking at bringing in some additional instruments to add more levels to our blues, particularly for Beijing gigs.
(3) I have most of the material ready for an Eric Allen II album. I may start recording on that project late in 2021. Regardless, I’m looking forward to 2021 being a watershed year.

Thanks to Eric Allen's music, "She Waits", infinitely affectionate, will bring the beautiful resonance between people closer in an instant. Peace and beauty, the world looks forward to it!
All on Death Row,Holy Rollin,Rattlesnake Mama和Stillhouse Blues。
I like very much All on Death Row, Holy Rollin’, Rattlesnake Mama, and Stillhouse Blues. It’s very cool! I like the groove. She Waits is also a cool song.
I really like Holy Rollin‘ and Stillhouse Blues. I enjoy the tempo, it's just like a leisurely and carefree life in the country.
Impresario
All on Death Row
All the songs are quite original and creative. 40 Years & Bartender's Guitar are more melodic and possibly purer blues music. Rattlesnake Mama & Stillhouse Blues are a talking style of singing. All on Death Row is great musically too.
I am particularly struck by She Waits. Rarely-heard, somber American blues for a Chinese war time hero. What a great fit!
Hugh Reed
The Velvet Underpants
Tom Waits - for no man - but Eric’s new cuts - freshly rolled out from the Woodshed are for every man - and women - Eric doesn’t just ‘talk the talk’ but he ‘woks the wok’ with his unique Beijing Blooze - from the Far East to the Wild West - from the Great Wall to the Mexican Border Wall - from the PRC to KFC - Eric’s musical landscapes are wider than them all.
Dan Taylor,
Harridans
Sounding great, Eric! Loving the string parts, really mixes it up a little. The strings on She Waits...sounding beautiful! Really well done.
Korey Livy,Big Twin
The raw natural tones of Eric Allen are beautifully showcased in his debut self titled album. The song “She Waits” is a testament to his skills as a songwriter and performer, capturing the haunting echos from the past.
Jamie Mcilroy,
Bang Bang Mary
Eric Allen takes you on a full journey with his original blues music. From the upbeat sinister shuffle of All on Death Row to the beautiful and touching She Waits, he has truly produced something special with the release of his album.
Badr Benjelloun,
Somewhere in the far east, where the baijiu fills in for moonshine, an outlaw on death row with a 40 years sentence tells the tales of a rattlesnake mama at the stillhouse blues woodshed awaiting his return to tell that joke again. Eric’s debut is a musical journey in the fine tradition of "3 chords and the truth” to rediscover that backroom stench, smoky haze, and liquid burn that are still in you.
Paul F.北京Paddy O‘Shea’s
Eric brings us to the roots of blues with special notes. You can feel his soul moving through the album. Nicely done!
I have enjoyed listening to the new album by Eric Allen. He is a talented musician with his own style and it is great to listen to his original blues music. I enjoyed the tracks and found a good variety of blues music on the album.
