清末到现在，对慈禧太后被称为“老佛爷”的原因，说法有很多种。
其中流传比较广的说法，其说又有两个版本，一说因为有一年北京大旱，慈禧太后与朝廷官员向如来佛祈雨，只三天雨就来了，李莲英趁机恭维她像佛爷一样灵，此后“老佛爷”这个称号不胫而走。
