可惜这么好的将领，却因为性格耿直，不愿攀附权贵，被官员排挤，一直未受重用，后来病逝，在他病逝后，乾隆念其功绩，追封他为一等伯爵。只能说康熙虽然英明，可是面对那么多大臣，也难免不会被蛊惑，这样的一员大将平定三番了，还不能被重用，真是心酸。
